Wonderful Photograph

This striking image of the Millais portrait situated in front of the high altar of the Brompton Oratory comes from the New Liturgical Movement blog and accompanies a report on a lecture about Newman as an “authentic theologian of the tradition”.  More photographs of the lecture are there and worth looking at.

This is by far my favourite image of the great Cardinal, and the vivid colour of the martyr’s gown (Newman was certainly qualified to wear it) gives way so beautifully with the soft features of the wise, noble face tinged with suffering but also steadfast, full of hope.  A splendid image of a great man.
